Junior Town Council

The Junior Town Councillors have been implementing their non-sponsored community projects during December/January. In Mount Pleasant councillors assisted Animal Welfare with a “spayathon” day.  The Zwelihle junior councillors worked as volunteers at the Summer Camp for two weeks.  Hawston councillors organized a sports/games day at the Hawston swimming pool and received permission from the municpality to offer free entry for the day.  The Stanford councillors spent a day cleaning up the river area in Stanford.

Summer School

The major project in December was the Summer School.  This is such a worthwhile project even though it comes at a time when staff are already very tired.  The Summer School ran as a Junior Town Council project and junior town councillors participated as volunteer leaders.

The Volunteers camp for this project ran from 5 – 7 December at Wortelgat.

Book Donation

Kirstenbosch Rotary Club donated another load of reading books.  Given the present focus on reading and literacy, these books are extremely welcome. The Overstrand Junior Town Councillors distributed the books.

OJTC Inauguration

The inauguration of the Junior Town Council on the 31st July went well. Feedback from several individuals who were present at this event was extremely positive – many people expressed their sense of hope for the future after seeing the integration of youngsters across race, school, geographical area, social class etc, and the way in which they interacted.

The inauguration was followed by a junior council training session on the 21st August.  The focus was on service delivery, communication and public speaking.
