Education Conference – Kampala

July 2010 – In between the World Cup festivities and the school holidays, Lois attended an Educator conference in Kampala, Uganda, for a few days. The Flora Family Foundation from the USA invited all their grantees with the purpose of discussing lessons learned, successes and challenges, which had impacted on the various organisations. One of the many highlights was meeting people from all over Africa, who grapple with the same issues relating to education.

Enlighten Video on YouTube

A very short video (15 min), depicting the work of Enlighten, was posted on youtube as part of a fundraising competition organised by the Flora Family Foundation in the US. If chosen as the winning entry, EET will raise substantial funding for some of its projects.

Lois will use the video for the presentation to be made in Kampala in June

Vanessa Alberts of overberginfo.com mentored two students, Olwethu Petros (one of our business students) and Greg Stock (student from Hermanus High) were directed by Lois. We are holding thumbs – to view it follow the link

This event, organised by U3A Hermanus, was one of the highlights on the Enlighten calendar and well attended by the communities.

Early Childhood Development

Early Childhood Development (ECD) in the Overstrand has received a major boost as funding was received to build a formal ECD site. Building is scheduled to begin at the end of March. The building will cater for 60 children and 15 babies and will be utilised as a resource centre by the whole ECD community at the same time.

Gerda is doing an enormous amount of work in this regard, including approaching local businesses to support this aspect of the project.  Peter Peiser will oversee the levelling and fencing and has provided a competitive quote for this work. The furnishing and fitting out of the (interim) resource centre in our business advice office downstairs has been completed.  The carpet has been laid and Peter has built in the shelves and desktops.
