STOP PRESS
July 2010 – National Minister for Basic Education, Ms. Angie Motshekga, has announced a revised Curriculum (as part of the Schooling 2025 Plan, a strategy of the Department of Basic Education to improve the SA schooling system in the next 15 years)). The main focus will be on content and transfer of knowledge so that South African learners can become more competitive in the international arena. The focus also returns to the use of handbooks in the classroom. National Guidelines for teaching will be available from the Department in all the provinces. Most of the changes will take place during 2011 and 2012.
Enlighten Reference Library
July 2010 – The Enlighten Reference Library, our exciting, 4th project for the year, is “happening”. The shelving in Training Room 4 in the hall has been fitted, carpets have been installed and books have been sourced by Biblionef. The library is now up and running. The van for the mobile library has been ordered.
Winter School
July 2020 – The Winter School, presented at the Enlighten Centre and at three schools for two weeks during the long school holidays, focused on teachers and learners from Grade 4-6. Teachers ran sessions for language, maths and science/technology. Training and reflecting sessions for the teachers have taken place. Even though the numbers of children attending classes were lower than expected at some of the schools, teachers indicated that they’ve benefitted immensely.
Enlighten used members of the community to prepare food for the hungry learners and teachers at the Zwelihle Primary School. The other schools did their own catering.
Hawston Steel Pan Band play at World Cup
June / july 2010 – The Hawston Steel Pan band, taught and mentored by the Enlighten Music team, played at various World Cup venues, which included 14 performances. This was hugely exciting for the band members and required extra hard work and commitment from all parties involved.
Literacy and Numeracy Update
The Literacy and Numeracy programmes are being implemented with all the facilitators and new service providers firmly in the saddle. The mobile Numeracy and Literacy laboratory visits schools at the request by the educators. Intensive mathematical training, facilitated by Aarnout Brombacher, started at the beginning of the second term. Frank Coetzer, EET Maths facilitator is busy organising a winter school to be held during the extended holiday period in June/July. A number of schools have expressed interest in attending this event.
Music Forum
Music activities as part of the Arts and Culture programme continue to be a source of joy for many. The Marimba Performance band is in high demand and is booked up for gigs many weekends. Bets and Magriet attended an International Music Development Forum conference in Stellenbosch. Valuable contacts were made for future collaboration with similar NGO’s.
