Overstrand Junior Town Council

The Junior Town Council raised funds for the Child Welfare by holding a street collection.

Members of Hermanus High School’s Junior Town Council were able to contribute packs of disposable nappies for new born babies in the maternity ward of the Hermanus Provincial Hospital.

Qhayiya Secondary pupils painted a striking wall mural in the small park at the entrance to the old location. Part of this project is the cleanup of the park which includes removing large rocks and filling holes to make the park safer for the children.

Mosaic Workshop

A Mosaic Workshop was held at the Stanford Community Centre on 7th November from 5.30 until 9.00pm. There were 7 youth between the age of 18 – 25 (and one of 17). I was impressed that 7 out of 10 attended as they had to find their own transport and it was pouring buckets.

Lara Levine from Mila Mosaics facilitated – the theme was "The Sun" and the students had to design, cut, place and paste the glass mosaics to create their art works on a 23cm square board.  Everyone was a little nervous to start but soon all settled in to the most enjoyable and exciting evening. Aron Gcotylelwa who  organised the Stanford youth gave a little speech at the end – thanking us for introducing them to this new world and in his words "Stanford has been going for 150 years and this is the first time someone has done something like this for the community”.

Post School Youth Camp

The Post-School Youth Camp of the 9 – 11 November was a great success. The focus was on life-skills. Wortelgat is a very special place and young people are absolutely competing for a place on the camps. Just like Checkers, we are “getting better and better” at facilitating the camps and presenting relevant sessions!
