Staff Changes

Shelley Aronstam – Literacy – has left us to live and work again in Cape Town.  Although she will continue to be associated with Enlighten to do ad hoc workshops and events she will be sorely missed by staff and schools.  Ally married in December but will but will return for an interim period on a part-time basis.

A warm welcome is extended to new Enlighten staff.  They are……..Anthea Africa, who joined Enlighten as the Technology and Literacy facilitator, Jimmy Wepener,  Business Ventures facilitator, Rocky de Villiers who will be managing the Language and Numeracy Laboratory, and Lianna Morrison, our new counselor, who has a full timetable at three schools already. We hope that they will feel content and fulfilled at Enlighten.

New Interventions

2009 will see the introduction of two part-time interventions – the use of the Literacy/Numeracy laboratory, and an entrepreneurship programme – Business Ventures – at Grade 5 and Grade 7 levels in five schools.

Baseline Tests

Our baseline test results were presented to the management team and it was gratifying to note that our analysis of the results is very much in line with departmental perceptions. After assessing the November baseline test results in consultation with teachers at the schools it has been decided that our main focus in mathematics for 2009 will be at the grade 4 level. However, we will continue to provide support for the other grades as well.

The appointment of "Rocky de Villiers" as a facilitator  for the Literacy/Numeracy computer laboratory has made it possible for learners and teachers to start using the Cami programmes that were purchased for this purpose. The term has kicked off with grade 4, grade 11 and grade 12 learners making use of these facilities.

The first of a series of workshops for mathematics teachers will be held on the 10th of March to address problems that were identified in the baseline tests.

Completion of Projects

Patti Silbert and Johan Ryk have both completed their whole school development projects. Both have been a joy to work with and I certainly will miss them both.

Early Childhood Development

Early Childhood Development (ECD) in the Overstrand has received a major boost as funding was received to build a formal ECD site. Building is scheduled to begin at the end of March. The building will cater for 60 children and 15 babies and will be utilised as a resource centre by the whole ECD community at the same time.

Gerda is doing an enormous amount of work in this regard, including approaching local businesses to support this aspect of the project.  Peter Peiser will oversee the levelling and fencing and has provided a competitive quote for this work. The furnishing and fitting out of the (interim) resource centre in our business advice office downstairs has been completed.  The carpet has been laid and Peter has built in the shelves and desktops.

Mosaic Work In Progress

The work on the construction of the mosaic art on the peripheral walls started.  Sandi (the winner of the design competition) leads the construction team of 5 locals. Lara Levine from Mile Mosaics is also involved in guiding and assuring quality.  Training Room 1 has been converted into a mosaic studio.  The mosaic design will be translated onto 32 panels first, before being placed on the walls.

The panels look amazing and staff check in every day to see the magic in progress.
