KEYS HANDED OVER for the new ECD site in Zwelihle.

A braai for the workers and final inspection have been held and the handover of keys took place on the 29th May. The next step is to fully equip the site. We intend holding the official opening of Siyakha Educare and Enrichment Centre at the beginning of July, in time for the start of the third term of the year.

SCHOOL TEAS

An informal afternoon tea was held at Qhayiya on the 12th May with the full staff complement.  This is part of our plan to get to know educators better and develop relationships with all educators – even those with whom we are presently not working.  It turned out to be a very happy occasion with a lot of banter and laughter.  Thanks to all the Enliighten staff who made the effort to be present.  This “afternoon tea” was followed by the same thing at Masakhane on the 18th and Gansbaai Primary on the 19th.  We all believe that this initiative is reaping great benefits and educators and schools have certainly appreciated the efforts which we have made to spend time with them informally.

ECD

An ECD Forum meeting was held on the 13th May.  Representatives from both the Dept. of Education and the Dept. of Social Services were present and useful input and information was provided.  Additional members are joining the Forum and we really should be able to be considered fully representative of this region now.  Clint August is the programme manager for Early Years Services, mandated to ensure that training for ECD is provided in the Overberg region – OTI’s Clint, the caterer!  At least we have a fully established and happy relationship with him already.

LITERACY/LANGUAGE LAB

Theron Mqhu began working as our new lab facilitator at the beginning of May.  Already he has brought something different to the party in that he has made appointments at the schools in Zwelihle and assured educators that he can train them using Xhosa for explanatory purposes.  A timetable has been established for him and we are also offering some time to OTI for the students in desperate need of literacy and numeracy support.  Two small groups of learners attend from Bosko, the Grade 12’s from Hawston and from Qhayiya also, maths learners from lower grades at Qhayiya have started attending, and the group from Haygrove will begin in July. Mr Msebenzi from Masakhane has asked for some help for a group of his teachers and Theron is making arrangements to fit in these 12 teachers.
