IGNITING EDUCATION – MEETING THE CHALLENGES TOGETHER

28 to 30 October 2009 A Reflective Review on the current state of education in South Africa took place at the Enlighten Education Centre in Hermanus during the last week of October in 2009. There were plenary sessions with a panel of guest speakers, as well as international speakers, and breakaway sessions for focus groups.

Programme Details – view here….. The focus was threefold: 1. A review of the current state of education in South Africa. 2. A review of the rolé of academics, educationalists, NGO’s, business and civil society in education. 3. Developing strategies to meet the challenges ahead. Attention will be given to Early Childhood Development (ECD), General Education and Training (GET), Further Education and Training (FET), Higher Education, Business and Education. The objective of the Reflective Review was an opportunity for academics, educators, policy makers, executives from organisations and members of the community to meet and discuss ways in which they can work together to bring about notable improvements in the education of our learners. This will involve the following processes: • Review and analyse the present situation. How do our learners rate on various test outcomes regarding their capabilities especially with regard to Literacy and Numeracy. • Explore the challenges that arise in the various educational sectors. • Examine International trends in education. • Disseminate the proceedings (presentations, papers and discussions) of the Reflective Review to organisations and departments concerned with education.

 

Format and Programme The Reflective Review opened with a banquet on Wednesday evening, a full day of plenary and breakaway sessions on Thursday and presentations by  International speakers on Friday morning.
