Enhancements to the EET Centre Building

The reconstruction of the Enlighten Hall is complete.

The hall features a Language and Numeracy Laboratory upstairs, catering for 24 students, as well as two additional training rooms downstairs.

The change has been welcomed by all and has transformed the hall into a friendly and attractive space for training.

Mounting of Mosaic Mural

After 2 1/2 months of translating our winning mosaic design onto panels we started mounting the 32 panels onto the 6 walls. Great excitement!!! It is as well that the traffic department recently put up a stop street on our corner as I am certain many accidents would happen as passing motorists admire the work of art. Well done to the team!!

We now hope the weather holds so that we can join the panels and grout them in time for our unveiling on 21st May 2009.

Mosaic Work In Progress

The work on the construction of the mosaic art on the peripheral walls started.  Sandi (the winner of the design competition) leads the construction team of 5 locals. Lara Levine from Mile Mosaics is also involved in guiding and assuring quality.  Training Room 1 has been converted into a mosaic studio.  The mosaic design will be translated onto 32 panels first, before being placed on the walls.

End of Year Exams

The hall was fully utilized for the whole of November by the Qhayiya matrics to write their final examinations.  In order to meet departmental space requirements, we have also had to make the training room available for the overflow of students.  This has been a major undertaking, especially on the two occasions when we have had to clear the hall for other events booked a long time ago.

The ORT technology teachers have also written their final exams – squashed like sardines into the training room.  They will be mightily relieved to have their weekends to themselves again.  There will be an official graduation early in the new year.  We will make every effort to ensure that these teachers are used in posts where they can apply their technology training from the beginning of next year.

The After Party

To celebrate the building of the centre, the Sunshine Foundation also sponsored art competitions not only as a means of making the new
centre look good, but as a means of involving the community and increasing awareness of Enlighten’s work.

The winners of the youth art competition to design Mosaic Murals for the centre’s peripheral walls were announced at the opening by Stefan Hundt the curator of the Sanlam Art Collection. Stefan who had been aided by fellow judges Stephen Welz (well known Auctioneer) and Tyrone Appolis (South African artist), handed over a first prize of R40,000 to Sandi Mdekazi. Three merit awards of R7,000 each were
awarded to Sonnet Flynn, Monique Campher and Nicolene Dorfling. All entrants work will be on display in the centre’s hall until after the Hermanus Whale festival.

Sandi Mdekazi – First Prize Winner of R40,000

Sandi Mdekazi, a 27 year old living in Nyanga, attended a Community Art Project (CAP) proramme in Woodstock for 2 years after he matriculated in 2000. It was here that he learnt mosaic skills and connected with his teacher Lovell Friedman who has employed Sandy on an adhoc basis to assist with the installation of a few public mosaic works in the Cape Town area. Sandy who is passionate about art makes his frugal living by selling mosaic mirrors and hearts at Gugo Sthebe Community Centre and occasionally at Spier Estate. He is currently gaining further mosaic skills training on a 3 month course at the Spier Academy.  Sandy dreams of holding an exhibition of his mosaic work which may come true now that he has some funds to buy materials and to rent some studio space.
