Enlighten Education Trust strives to ‘improve every aspect of education’ in the Overstrand region through teacher-upskilling and direct services to children. These services aim to enhance the children’s intellectual, physical and emotional development. In order to achieve the greatest long-term effect, Enlighten focuses mainly on Early Childhood Development and Primary School education, with a particular emphasis on the Foundation Phase, where the greatest impact on future learning is grounded.
Established in 2002, the Enlighten Education Trust’s founding vision was to ‘improve the quality of teaching, learning and life in the Overstrand’. With the recent population explosion in the area, the level of unemployment and poverty has increased and the quality of education in disadvantaged communities is often problematic. It is this need that Enlighten strives to address. From an initial two projects in seven schools, the Trust has grown to 18 projects in 22 schools and 30 ECD and home-based educare centres.
Enlighten facilitators provide in-service curriculum support and assistance to teachers through working alongside them. This includes the improvement of general teaching skills, classroom management, and filling the gaps in content knowledge in the learning areas of maths, literacy, science, arts and culture, and technology. ECD interventions include practitioner training, upgrading of centres, and mobile book and toy libraries. Extramural services for children take place at the Enlighten centre.
