A new chapter for “Shine” at Enlighten

After on-going consultations throughout 2014 with the Shine organisation in Cape Town and members of the Overstrand Education Department, The Enlighten Shine Chapter was launched at the beginning of 2015 at the Lukhanyo Primary School in Zwelihle.

In March a group of volunteers were recruited and trained at Enlighten. A school classroom at Lukhanyo Primary was allocated to the project.

Shine is a literacy project aiming to generate a love of books and reading in children at Grade 2 level.

In 2015 11 volunteers worked with 19 pupils. These learners were assessed in June and again in November. The results showed that the Shine concept is a roaring success.

In February 2016 172 Grade 2 learners were assessed. 12 Volunteers will be working with 24 learners.

The principal and grade 2 teachers are excited about the positive results of 2015 and are looking forward to an even better performance in the coming year.
