Sandi Mdekazi – First Prize Winner of R40,000
Sandi Mdekazi, a 27 year old living in Nyanga, attended a Community Art Project (CAP) proramme in Woodstock for 2 years after he matriculated in 2000. It was here that he learnt mosaic skills and connected with his teacher Lovell Friedman who has employed Sandy on an adhoc basis to assist with the installation of a few public mosaic works in the Cape Town area. Sandy who is passionate about art makes his frugal living by selling mosaic mirrors and hearts at Gugo Sthebe Community Centre and occasionally at Spier Estate. He is currently gaining further mosaic skills training on a 3 month course at the Spier Academy. Sandy dreams of holding an exhibition of his mosaic work which may come true now that he has some funds to buy materials and to rent some studio space.
